Controversial Study Aims to “Reanimate” the Brain Dead

We’re a long way from bringing dead people back to life, although the science of brain death is fascinating. A hundred years ago if your heart stopped, you were dead. Period. Then we realized we could jump-start hearts with CPR, and later using those nifty shock panels. Death isn’t a hard line. Brains are similar, and there are a lot of dead people interred in frozen capsules hoping to be re-animated. This latest study isn’t trying to revive an entire brain, but just aspects of it. The immediate hope being that the knowledge gained will help people with brain trauma or Alzheimer’s. Interestingly, the scientist conducting the experiment has received a deluge of angry or frightened letters accusing him of starting the zombie apocalypse.
