Obi Wan and the Imperial Census

This video is not only hilarious, it features me with a CGI lightsaber (every video should, really, including ones I have nothing to do with, including foreign films) rocking a spot-on Obi Wan Kenobi impression. If you’re a Star Wars nerd like myself, you’ll find this parody funny. Because you too have probably asked yourself multiple times, “Wait, Obi Wan Kenobi went into hiding… on Darth Vader’s home planet? And changed his name to… ‘Ben‘ Kenobi? Vader could find the guy using a phone book! Geeks like myself have dedicated decades worth of manpower sussing out these logical flaws, which is probably unfair: most two hour films are not meant to be 100% logically coherent documentaries. They’re mostly concerned with plot, characters, and raking in millions of dollars. The apotheosis of using Star Wars nitpickery for comedic purposes is the wonderful essay, “On the Implausibility of the Death Star’s Trash Compactor” by Joshua Tyree.

The sketch we put together relies partly on this, but the “game” of it is inverting the Obi Wan Kenobi archetype. In Star Wars he is the Jungian embodiment of a sage and mentor. So I found it very funny to portray him as something of a lech.

Enjoy!
